A Chapter in the History of Exhibitions

A 16mm film about the radical, modernist exhibition designs of Italian post-war architect Franco Albini and his collaboration with museum director Caterina Marcenaro in the early 1950s. The film is shot in the galleries of the Palazzo Bianco and Palazzo Rosso, and the Museo di Sant’Agostino, in Genoa. Albini and Marcenaro’s desire was to literally ‘float’ art in the museum, and the film reconstructs Albini’s unprecedented and extraordinary hydraulic lifting and rotating support for Giovanni Pisano’s Fragment from the Tomb of Margaret Of Brabant (1313). This device, which now looks utterly eccentric, can be seen as one of the first examples of interactive museum sculpture display.The film focuses on Albini and Marcenaro’s stated desire to “emphasise the atmosphere of purity and tranquillity that surrounds a real masterpiece” as a particularly explicit example of the modernist ideology of the museum to radically decontextualise art from its surroundings.

Recreating furtive glances, Ellard & Johnstone film the details of what remains of the exhibition displays in Genoa's museums and the apartment of curator Caterina Marcenaro, all designed by Franco Albini with the assistance of Franca Helg. The camera floats in space just as certain paintings in Genoa's Palazzo Bianco float, suspended in mid-air by horizontal metal bars that visitors can manipulate. In a surprising change of register—from colour (the present) to black and white (the archive document), and from live action to photorealistic 3D rendering re-filmed in 16 mm—the final scene reconstructs the operation of the hydraulic exhibition device for the Fragment of the Tomb of Margaret of Brabant, thus filling a historical void, as to date, no moving image documenting the device has been found. The film's title refers to the book by architect and historian Michael Brawne (1925-2003) devoted to the new wave of radical choices in exhibition design and curation, which features the work of Marcenaro and Albini for the Palazzo Bianco¹. Neue Museen is the first part of a trilogy of films on Italian modernist architecture. The second film was completed in 2013: Everything Made Bronze, on Carlo Scarpa's intervention for the Gipsoteca Canoviana in Possagno. The third part is currently in production.

Un chapitre de l’histoire des expositions

« Un film 16mm sur les designs d’exposition radicaux et modernistes de Franco Albini, architecte italien de l’après-guerre, et sur sa collaboration avec Caterina Marcenaro, directrice de musée, au début des années 1950. Le film est tourné dans les galeries du Palazzo Bianco, du Palazzo Rosso et du Museo di Sant’Agostino, à Gênes. Albini et Marcenaro souhaitaient littéralement faire « flotter » les œuvres d’art dans le musée, et le film reconstitue l’extraordinaire et sans précédent dispositif hydraulique de levage et de rotation mis au point par Albini pour le Fragment de la tombe de Marguerite de Brabant (1313) de Giovanni Pisano. Le film met l’accent sur le désir déclaré d’Albini et de Marcenaro de « souligner l’atmosphère de pureté et de tranquillité qui entoure un véritable chef-d’œuvre », en tant qu’exemple particulièrement explicite de l’idéologie moderniste du musée visant à décontextualiser radicalement l’art par rapport à son environnement. »

En recréant des regards furtifs, Ellard & Johnstone filment les détails de ce qui reste de la scénographie des musées de Gênes et de l’appartement de la curatrice Caterina Marcenaro, tous conçus par Franco Albini assisté de Franca Helg. La caméra flotte dans l'espace tout comme flottent certains tableaux du Palazzo Bianco de Gênes, suspendus dans le vide à l’aide de barres métalliques horizontales, des dispositifs manipulables par les visiteurs. Dans un changement de registre surprenant — passant de la couleur (le présent) au noir et blanc (le document d'archives), et de la prise de vue réelle à un rendu 3D photoréaliste refilmé en 16mm — la scène finale reconstitue le fonctionnement du dispositif hydraulique pour le Fragment de la tombe de Marguerite de Brabant, comblant ainsi un vide historique, car à ce jour, aucune image animée documentant le dispositif n'a été trouvée. Le titre du film fait référence à l’ouvrage de l’architecte et historien Michael Brawne (1925—2003) consacré à la nouvelle vague de choix radicaux en matière de design et de curation des expositions, où figure le travail de Marcenaro et Albini pour le Palazzo Bianco¹. Neue Museen est le premier volet d'une trilogie de films sur l'architecture moderniste italienne. Le deuxième film a été achevé en 2013 : Everything Made Bronze, sur l'intervention de Carlo Scarpa pour la Gipsoteca canoviana à Possagno. Le troisième volet est en cours de réalisation.

Graham Ellard and Stephen Johnstone have worked collaboratively since 1993. Their work revolves around the craft and skill of 16mm filmmaking and emphasises the material particularity of film – its slowness, its unique colour palette and extraordinary subtlety of tonal range. Often combined with archive material, drawings, models and studio recreations, their recent films have become increasingly concerned with the hand, the physical manipulation of materials and the activities of ‘making’. At the centre of their films is a concern with the altered forms of attention, and the resulting intensity of looking, that comes from using a lens to frame and magnify details and capture fleeting atmospheric effects. Since 1993 their work has been shown internationally, including group exhibitions at Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Tramway, Glasgow; MoMA, Sydney; Tate Liverpool; Setouchi Triennale, Japan; Filmhuis, Den Haag. Solo exhibitions include: The Weston Studios, The Royal Academy of Art, London; The British School at Rome Gallery, Rome; Satellite Gallery, Nagoya, Japan; Site Gallery, Sheffield; De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill; Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art, London. Leur travail s’articule autour du savoir-faire et des techniques du cinéma 16 mm et met l'accent sur les particularités matérielles du film : sa lenteur, sa palette de couleurs unique et l’extraordinaire subtilité de sa gamme tonale. Souvent combinés à des archives, des dessins, des maquettes et des reconstitutions en studio, leurs films récents s'intéressent de plus en plus à la main, à la manipulation physique des matériaux et aux activités de « fabrication ». Au cœur de leurs films se trouve un intérêt pour les formes modifiées de l’attention et l’intensité du regard qui en résulte, qui proviennent de l’utilisation d’un objectif pour cadrer et agrandir les détails et capturer les effets atmosphériques fugaces. Depuis 1993, leurs œuvres ont été présentées à l’échelle internationale, notamment dans le cadre d’expositions collectives : Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Tramway, Glasgow; MoMA, Sydney; Tate Liverpool; Setouchi Triennale, Japan; Filmhuis, Den Haag.
